  Don't Waste Your Time

Chichester News, 8th January 2010

Now you might think that the start of January is the easiest time of year to be writing a piece for the health and beauty column? Wrong, because who really wants to hear about detox diets when we are still using up Christmas leftovers and the shock of a few hours at the sales is enough to drive many people in search of dietary comfort. But if you are at least in the planning stage of your post Christmas and New Year health drive, consider how you are going to make sure that you don't waste your time getting fit and healthy in 2010.

Many of you will make promises about the things that you would like to do and the goals that you would like to reach over the next twelve months. It may be that these are not just drunken ill-conceived New Year's resolutions, but well intentioned and important changes that will have a positive and beneficial effect on your life. To attain satisfaction and reach any of your goals you will need to plan an effective strategy. Fail to plan, and you plan to fail!

The problem with deciding to get fit and healthy is that it is a rather vague target, and vague targets are easy to miss. Every January people set out with well-intentioned but ill-conceived plans, and many will invest considerable time, money and effort at gyms, or embarking on diet programs. I applaud people who try hard, but I hate seeing them fail. If you dislike gyms then just going to the gym is bound to fail again. If you have tried diets before and they have all failed then yet another weight loss programme is likely to fail again.

This year, devise a plan so that you do reach your specific health related goal. If for example you want to drop 3 dress sizes by summer and your plan includes, buying a healthy eating cook-book and making your own snacks, walking in the hills with the family every Sunday morning, and rejoining the fitness class that you enjoyed before the kids were born, then your chances of success are greatly improved, because it is a well conceived plan that you will enjoy doing, is sustainable, and fits around your time schedule.

Think what being fit and healthy really means to you. Think what you want to achieve, and then devise a specific, measurable, realistic, time framed plan that you can commit to, and adapt and build upon throughout the year. Why not try the Chichester 10k run on the 7th February to give your healthy living plan a kick-start. Don't be intimidated, these events are great fun and extremely rewarding. The memories will last a lifetime and it will get 2010 off to a really positive start. Get help from a qualified, experienced professional if you need help designing or implementing your plan, remember to have fun along the way, and have a very happy, fit and healthy 2010.
